This README is actually for TERM version 4.01. Version 4.00 had a couple of problems that I needed to get cleared up. There was a problem with sending files using anything but xmodem or ymodem non- batch. There were a couple of very minor VT100 problems. TCONFIG would not set the timezone properly. And a 'chat' parameter was added to the parameter file. This is used when calling a remote system that is really another PC (running PC-TALK for example). This mode will echo the remote's characters and process backspaces and carriage returns properly. To activate it, edit the proper parameter file (the one being used to call the remote system) and add the line: chat=1 I hope this clears up most of the major problems people have reported so far. If you encounter further problems, please let me know. I want to stress one point: if you are using autospeed detect, be SURE to change the 300 baud connect string. I recommend 'CONNECT\r'. If you do not do this, it will always connect at 300 baud!!! Greg ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TERM version 4.00. It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. It's probably not in the shape I'd want it in, but I have to let go of it sometime. I've added several new features to TERM: Zmodem file transfers, kermit file transfers, Compuserve VIDTEX and B protocol support, and several other things. I recommend using zmodem whenever possible. As always, I recommend reading through the manual. I apologize that I did not have time to rework the script file portion. I know that it is rather obtuse and I'll try to improve it. I never did get very many responses on my queries on AusTInet and Compuserve, so I'll repeat my request here. If you are using a modem that requires some special configuration (by special I mean other than the default) please send me a copy of your configuration _file_ (so I can see exactly what you changed). This will allow me to include a modem type selection in TCONFIG. If you are upgrading from a previous release of TERM, the first thing you will need to do is run TCONFIG. TCONFIG will convert the old format configuration file (TERM.CFG) to the new format. The new format loads faster and also means you will not have to use your text editor to change TERM's configuration. TCONFIG will allow you to specify any of TERM's configurable parameters. The menus operate in the same manner as the menus in TERM to make it easier to use. You will need to select the "Set defaults" item by using the cursor keys to move the cursor bar over the proper selection. Pressing will bring up the menu and allow changes to be made. Change the file transfer buffer size to 8192. If you have a parameter file set up to answer the phone, you will need to set duplex equal to half and lnm equal to one. The duplex can be set from the parameter setup menu, but you will have to use a text editor to change lnm in the parameter file itself (ie. answer.trm). I'm distributing the documentation in a compressed format. It is too large to fit on the disk with TERM and TCONFIG in an uncompressed form. To extract it on a two floppy system, format a fresh disk and copy the file T400DOC.EXE to it. Then execute it (ie. T400DOC). It should create a file called TERM.DOC (about 200k) that you can copy to your printer or peruse. You hard disk users just need to make sure you have enough space. Well, that should be enough to get you started on this release. As always, let me know if you encounter problems. I may not always answer your letters, but I sure do appreciate them, and I always try to fix the problems you report. If you have suggestions for improvements, let me have them. I may not always agree, or use them, but it can't hurt and I can alway use a good suggestion. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions and bug reports the last time, and thanks especially to my wife Karen. I know she's as glad to see this get out as I am (probably more so). Enjoy.
