THE REFLECTED BEAM PRODUCES A SPOT OF LIGHT THAT SCANS ACROSS THE PRODUCT AS THE MIRROR ROTATES. THE LIGHT IS SCATTERED BY THE PRODUCT. (ON CHANNEL I THE LIGHT IS REFLECTED; ON CHANNEL II IT IS TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE PRODUCT.) SCATTERED LIGHT FROM THE PRODUCT ENTERS AN ACRYLIC ROD COLLECTOR AND IS INTERNALLY REFLECTED AND DIRECTED TOWARD THE FACE OF A PHTOMULTIPLIER TUBE. THE TUBE, LOCATED INSIDE THE PHTOMULTIPLIER HOUSING, PRODUCES AN ELECTRICAL SIGNAL PROPORTIONAL TO THE LIGHT RECIEVED. THIS SIGNAL IS AMPLIFIED BY A PREAMP CARD IN THE HOUSING AND THEN TRANSMITTED TO THE CHANNEL DRAWER. .SKIP
.COMMENT PAGE 6 THE AMPLIFIED SIGNAL, KNOW AS THE "COMPOSITE PA" SIGNAL, CONTAINS THE INFORMATION USED TO DETERMINE PRODUCT QUALITY. IT HAS TWO SEPARATE COMPONENTS PRODUCED BY THE SCANNING ACTION OF THE DEFLECTED LASER BEAM. THE LIGHT FIRST PASSES THROUGH A FILTER IN THE AUTOCALIBRATION ASSEMBLY, WHICH PRODUCES THE FIRST COMPONENT CALLED "SELF-CHECK." NEXT THE PRODUCT IS SCANNED PRODUCING THE "PRODUCT PEDESTAL" COMPONENT. PRODUCT DEFECTS ENCOUNTERED DURING A SCAN WILL EITHER INCREASE OR DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF SCATTERED LIGHT. CORRESPONDINGLY A CHANGE WILL BE PRODUCED IN THE "PRODUCT PEDESTAL." NOTE THAT THE LIGHT PASSING THROUGH THE SELF-CHECK ASSEMBLY DOES NOT INTERACT WITH THE PRODUCT. THUS, THE FIRST COMPONENT IS AN INDEPENDENT REFERENCE THAT CAN BE USED TO TEST THE SYSTEM. .SKIP THE "COMPOSITE PA" SIGNAL IS PROCESSED BY THE CHANNEL DRAWER ELECTRONICS. IF A DEFECT IS DETECTED, A SIGNAL IS SENT TO THE PROPER LANE PRINTER IN THE REMOTE CONSOLE AND ITS LOCATION, TO THE NEAREST YARD, WILL BE RECORDED. .SKIP EACH CHANNEL HAS ITS OWN DC POWER SUPPLY FOR OPERATING THE CARDS IN THE CHANNEL DRAWER AND PHOTOMULTIPLIER HOUSING. .SKIP .SKIP .PAGE .CENTER FIGURE 1 .CHAPTER CHAPTER-III .PAGE
