Here are all the pictures I took during VCF East 2023 that the subject was OK with me putting online. Title is what the subject typed into the PDP-8. I took two types of pictures. The first was for printing as ASCII art. They were 132 characters wide by 140 characters high. My printer was printing 10 characters per inch and 8 lines per inch.
For these you will see the picture taken by the PDP-8 and one where I converted the ASCII art output from the PDP-8 to a picture. It was converted with a scan of the printer characters so hopefully is reasonably representative of viewing the printout from a good distance. Seems to look a little better than the actual printout. The PDP-8 picture has been scaled in HTML to have same aspect ratio as ASCII art picture and increased in size by about 60% to match ASCII art picture. If you download or right click and select view in new window/tab you will see the unscaled PDP-8 picture.
Clicking on the ASCII art picture will bring up a larger picture similar to looking at the printout closely. When you can see the characters it's harder to see the picture. Below the picture are links to the ASCII version and a histogram of pixel intensities the PDP-8 also printed to show simple processing of the image.
The other type of picture was either black and white or color at 640x480
Color was done by taking 3 pictures with red, green, and blue filters. The
PDP-8 took around 25 seconds to take each picture so motion causes artifacts.
It's hard to stand still for over a minute so many have color fringing
from the subject motion. Some have a second picture where I shifted each
individual color picture to align better which removed some of the color
I brought a small monitor so I could see the camera video for framing the
shot. I think some of the blur in the pictures was it was too small to
get optimal camera focus.
