This is the front side of one of the two fans which cools the VR14. The grease/oil often leaks out or gets hard in old fans so they need to be taken apart, cleaned and re-lubricated. Most of the fans are sleeve bearings but this one is ball bearing. The ball bearing seems to last much better but this one was noisy and not running well. The fans run off of the AC line.
At the top left are various spacer washers which reduce play and help keep the grease in the bearings. Below it are the seal and decorative cap for the open end of the shaft. Below it are the clips to keep it together. At the bottom left are the ball bearings. The one on the left you can see the balls if you select the large picture size. The one on the right I have put new grease in. All these parts go in the two ends of the center hole of the fan which goes on the shaft in the center of the housing.
The fan is a AC induction motor. The red in the center of the housing is the coil (stator) connected to the AC line which drives the fan (rotor)
The sleeve bearing version looks about the same. The center hole of the fan will normally have a sintered bronze sleeve in it which fits closely the shaft in the housing. The sintered bronze has oil in the pores which lubricate it.
The small clip isn't the correct one, it got away when I was taking it apart. The correct clip is smaller, I had to file this one down to get it to fit.
