The parts were next plated with Caswell electroless nickel plating so they wouldn't rust. It didn't match the original plating which looks more like aluminum but was easy. Original parts are the left of each pair. The first attempt flaked when I was doing more work so I stripped, hopefully cleaned better and re-plated. You can see in the original cylinder on the left the insert to center the pen cartridge. The drilled wood dowel will serve that purpose in the replacement part.
This also shows better where the spring goes. The original part has a small hole in the middle which the top of the ball point cartridge goes into to put pressure on the pen. The spring goes in the big hole with the brass washer over the end for the pen to press against. The big washer then holds the works in as shown here ( 53K) . I glued the big washer in place.
